A horrifying night of violence outside a Birmingham nightclub left one man with injuries so severe they will forever alter his life. This incident, which unfolded on October 4, 2024, serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences when tempers flare and vehicles become weapons.
It all began when a group of individuals were ejected from the Tunnel Club following an altercation inside. Once outside, their aggression escalated, and they directed their anger towards the club's security staff, determined to force their way back in. Their attempts involved aggressive kicking and punching at the club's entrance, despite repeated warnings to leave.
But here's where it gets truly chilling: Instead of dispersing, the group retreated to a Mercedes SUV, driven by 22-year-old Mohammed Suffi. Their intention? To wait for the person they had argued with. As the club's patrons began to exit, the men emerged from the Mercedes, seeking out their target, which inevitably led to a physical confrontation.
Suffi then made a calculated move, driving the grey Mercedes towards the crowd that had gathered outside the club. While many managed to leap out of the way, some were struck by the vehicle, though thankfully, none sustained life-threatening injuries at this initial stage. Undeterred, Suffi circled back, his intent clearly to re-engage in the conflict.
And this is the part most people miss: As Suffi drove past the club once more, his associate, Mustafa Gohari, exited the vehicle and struck someone in the street. This sparked further fighting, and when Gohari found himself on the ground, Daanyal Hussain briefly joined the fray before returning to the car. Suffi then reversed, and as he did, Gohari and the victim were in the middle of the road, grappling. They were mere car lengths ahead of the Mercedes when Suffi accelerated, aiming directly at the victim.
The impact sent the victim to the ground, and Suffi showed no remorse, driving over him with both sets of wheels. In a shocking turn of events, he also ran over his own friend, Gohari, who was positioned towards the nearside of the car. While no fatalities occurred, the victim suffered multiple fractures and described experiencing terrible pain, fearing for his life. His injuries are, indeed, life-changing.
Suffi continued his rampage, driving back towards the club and again targeting individuals in the road, forcing them to scatter. Even as the injured victim was being helped onto the pavement, Suffi swerved towards another man standing in the road, striking him and causing him to fall. Fortunately, this man was able to get up without serious injury.
The vehicle was later discovered in Oldbury. Through a meticulous investigation involving CCTV footage, mobile phone records, and witness testimonies, police identified Suffi as the driver and the other three men as accomplices. Suffi attempted to flee the country but was apprehended in June of the previous year.
In December, at Birmingham Crown Court, Suffi was convicted of wounding. He had previously admitted to affray and dangerous driving. His accomplices, Armaan Abid, Daanyal Hussain, and Mustafa Gohari, all pleaded guilty to affray and received suspended prison sentences. Suffi, however, was sentenced to 11 years and six months in prison and disqualified from driving for over 10 years. He will only be eligible for parole after serving two-thirds of his sentence.
Detective Inspector Michelle Cordell of the Major Crime Unit described the events as "appalling violence by four men intent on retribution." She highlighted the extreme danger of using a car as a weapon, stating, "the use of a car as a weapon could easily have resulted in people being killed and it is by pure luck that they weren’t." She emphasized Suffi's blatant disregard for others and his determination to inflict harm, concluding that his sentence brings justice to the victim and his loved ones, who will continue to navigate the challenges of rebuilding their lives.
