Play Ball Weekend, an initiative by Major League Baseball (MLB), is set to take place from June 5-7 across six continents, with over 200 activities hosted by MLB, its clubs, and partners. The event aims to inspire participation in baseball and softball, focusing on connecting with youth from diverse backgrounds and closing equity gaps in access to the sport. MLB's PLAY BALL initiative, supported by Kansas City Royals All-Star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., will see all 30 clubs wearing a special PLAY BALL patch on their caps. The weekend will feature two launch events, one at Mount Rushmore and another in Pittsburgh, with former MLB players volunteering as coaches. PLAY BALL Weekend 'by the numbers' includes 60,000 Franklin PLAY BALL sets distributed for casual play and events hosted by all 30 MLB clubs, 120 MiLB clubs, 61 Partner League Clubs, and hundreds of mayors. The event will also be celebrated globally, with activities in Asia, Australia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, New Zealand, and Nicaragua. MLB and Disney have launched a new commercial featuring All-Star shortstop Mookie Betts and his daughter Kynlee to promote Toy Story 5. First ballot Hall of Famers CC Sabathia and Ken Griffey Jr., alongside former All-Star Harold Reynolds, will co-host Play Ball Live powered by Zoom, offering tips and insights to youth players. The PLAY BALL initiative, launched in 2015, has seen significant growth in baseball and softball participation, with casual participation for ages 6+ increasing by 144% since 2014. MLB continues to expand the reach of PLAY BALL Weekend through virtual events using the Diamond Kinetics mobile app, allowing kids to participate in PLAY BALL-themed activities from anywhere. Additional partners, including Franklin Sports, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, PLAY BALL Youth Partners, and RCX Sports, will support the event with customized activities and challenges.
