Rolls-Royce CEO Open to Germany Joining UK's Fighter Jet Project (2026)

Rolls-Royce CEO Open to Germany's Participation in UK Fighter Jet Project

The CEO of Rolls-Royce, Tufan Erginbilgiç, has expressed openness to Germany's involvement in the UK's next-generation fighter jet program, arguing that it would boost business prospects. This aircraft, designed to replace the Eurofighter Typhoon, is a collaborative effort between the UK, Italy, and Japan. Rolls-Royce is responsible for the jet's engine, a role that has gained renewed attention as the Franco-German warplane project faces potential collapse.

In an interview with the Guardian, Erginbilgiç stated his willingness to engage with Germany's Global Combat Aircraft Programme (GCAP), known as Tempest. He highlighted their existing collaboration, including a significant presence in a factory near Berlin, and emphasized the potential benefits of broader participation.

Erginbilgiç noted, 'We already work with Germany, and the GCAP collaboration offers opportunities beyond our current partnerships. More countries joining means increased sales, as it's challenging to be a partner without purchasing.' He acknowledged that the decision rests with the government, not commercial entities, and emphasized the possibility of Germany's involvement depending on geopolitical developments.

Speculation about Germany's potential involvement in GCAP has intensified following a dispute with France over their joint fighter project. The Franco-German Future Combat Air System (FCAS) has encountered challenges due to a rift between the two leading companies, Dassault and Airbus, responsible for its development.

In February, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz indicated that the planned warplane did not align with Germany's requirements. He explained that the German military lacked a need for a nuclear-capable fighter, while France had such a requirement. Merz emphasized that the issue was a technical, not political, disagreement.

The UK has shown openness to new partners in GCAP, but experts warn that this could potentially delay the fighter's entry into service by 2035. Delays in signing a trilateral contract for the program have been attributed to the publication of a long-awaited defense spending plan.

European governments are actively increasing defense spending in response to Russian threats, and Donald Trump has urged the continent to prioritize its security. Erginbilgiç highlighted the UK's competitive advantage in certain military technologies, emphasizing the importance of increased spending and production capabilities for national security and commercial exports.

He stated, 'The UK currently exports Eurofighters. Without such capabilities, how can we export Eurofighters? It's a straightforward matter. Defense programs should not be viewed solely as defense initiatives; they can also stimulate economic growth and enhance civil aerospace technology.'

These comments came after Rolls-Royce reported a 40% profit increase in the previous year, attributed to growing demand for power from data centers. The ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran may further impact defense company stock prices when markets resume trading on Monday.
